Hypothetically, what is to keep a strong country like Russia or China from going after the United States if we invaded one their neighbors? What is the likelihood of a country disagreeing with the United States waging war in another country (or at least wanting to exploit it) and allying itself with the invaded country?

It is not of any benefit for a huge country such as the US, or Russia, or China, to attack another giant country. That sort of war is very pre-twentieth century, a world in which powers were attached to nationalities.

What has snuck up on us, and this is something the general public just is incapable of grasping it appears, is a world where the real power is concentrated in transnational corporations and syndicates. A kind of global mafiosa turf war is the current state.

As orwell predicted, the superpowers pretend to nationalism, and the main players claim to be in constant three corner war, but the truth is, everyone is actually being oppressed by huge business interests with no real national affiliations.

To illustrate this in such a way that the panicked public might grasp: consider NAFTA. Are permeable borders and undocumented workers a good thing for America? Doesn't matter: they are great for business.

Therefore that's the reality. Your leaders use your flags to control your allegience. There own allegience has nothing to do with nationalism.

It's the simplest of answers..... Money. If it's not financially viable to oppose the US, then China/Russia will not do it. If there is a forseeable monetary gain, then they will declare war. As far as the US invading another country and then China/Russia running to the aid of their allies..... this is a low possibility. Our military, while spread thin, is still greater than most and well trained. If you're concerned about something like Iraq, I wouldn't fret so much. While most of the world does disagree with our actions (including our own citizens), we come back to the topic of Money. We buy too many Chinese products and send too much aid to the world for any country to rise against us with military might......... though non-stop rhetoric is always available.

Only a country like North Korea with few outside ties would find reason to oppose us in war. Considering that it is a closed country with already hefty trade embargoes in place they have more to gain than lose in a war.

It all depends upon your definition of wining a war. If it were merely land armies battling out, China and Korea would undoubtedly win by sheer number of troops it could put into the field. However these nations are separated by thousands of miles of ocean. Thus a case of landing troops on the beach would be impossible for either side to attempt. The defending force would be able to annihilate and invading flotila. In an air war, whilst America and Canada have a more technologically advanced air force, again China and Korea would be able to send vast numbers to battle. However I feel in this case America would eventually prevail due to superior munitions. On the oceans, I have little doubt that whilst China and Korea might be able in future to command the seas, at present their sea power is not vast otherwise they would have invaded Taiwan many years ago. In regards to a nuclear confrontation, taking out of the equasion of a crippling first strike capability, neither side would win, but both would effectively lose. The ability to protect the command structure and launch a retaliatory strike in my opinion negate any disarming first or pre-emptive stike. Effectively neither side would seriously wish to engage in an open armed conflict. Canada & America trade with China (an emerging and rapidly growing economy) too much for either side to seriously want to lose such a large trading partner. ********(PURELY HYPOTHETICALLY)********* As for how were the Americans able to block, or effectively 'prevent' the sale of an Aircraft Carrier from Russia it probably came down to some hardball Politics. Russia finds itself in desperate need as it struggles to emerge from former communist state to a semi-capitalist society. If they don't make the trade, favourable terms could be reached on a number of other issues. Just because they're Russian doesn't make them stupid. They would opt for the most advantageous package for their own needs. It doesn't become an issue of how much will China pay to trade as how much will America pay NOT to let the trade complete. America I would agree has no right to do such a thing, but they do have the ability. In a matter like this no nation really cares about 'rights' as ability as to be realistic who is going to do anything about it. One common trait about every History book ever written about Wars or International conflicts.............The winner gets to write the story, the vanquished can be as 'morally right' as you like.

China: Lack of any naval or air superiority. China at best has around 15 nuclear weapons that can reach the west coast of the United States, the rest are leftovers from the Cold War era. China would either be nuked into obliteration or destroyed via air and naval supremacy, just like Iraq, which had the 4th largest land army in the world, mind you, in the 1st Gulf War.

Russia: Lack of any naval superiority and mutually assured destruction, as well as the fact that Russia is in an economic recession and would face major land engagements from the European Union.

That and the fact that neither nation could land amphibiously on the mainland United States. Simply put, we are far too more powerful militarily for either of these nations to try and take us out.

The likelihood of a war with either China or Russia is not huge at the moment. There is little to be gained by any such enterprize. There are occassional strains in our relations, but these are not a cause for war.

We buy too many Cheap goods from China. If they are at war with the US, who will purchase their tainted dogfood and toxic toothpaste. We make money off of their cheap labor and in turn they give us cheap products, that kill our dogs. Look at your mouse, its made in china, your keyboard is also made in China. China's not going to go to war with us becuase they got too much money to loose.

Russia had plenty of opportunites to go to war with us during the "Cold War". Here's the bottom line: Russia tried to compete with us for all of those years. The end result? Their communist government collapses and they become a democracy.

Waging war on communism is "so yesterday". Islamic extremism is the new "Evil". Instead of worrying about waging war with communism, lets make sure we turn Cuba into a Democracy, Castro is going to croke any day now and we should get a jump on Cuba before Islam does.

Our nuclear capability renders conventional warfare unpracticable. Our Navy is also the strongest and most technologically advanced, so they would never even hit our shores, and they know it.

More likely, they would try to destabilize us through support for terrorist states like Iran that are openly hostile to us. Or they would attack our transportation and information management systems. The Chinese for example, launch an average of 100 attacks on our cyberspace. It's just not reported, but it happens.

The millions of dollars we are spending to build schools and playgrounds for them each year. At least that's what we're doing in Russia, just look it up on the internet.
