just a couple of things. you might want to give yourself a day or two rest just before so your legs are really rested. get a good night's sleep and drink plenty of water. warm up properly with some light jogging for no less than 15 minutes. don't go out too fast so you can save some for the last lap. try not to run her race, run yours. especially since you just started doing this, remember that she has been doing this for a while.
and, even though you didn't ask, I'll tell you that that four years is nothing in running. I'm a long-distance runner and I get creamed by folks older than me all the time. I also am able to beat some girls (not all of them!) 15 years younger than I am because I have more experience.
It's really all about pacing, experience, and knowing your own ability.
In the end, you have to run your own race, where you are at the time. Remember, this is not your last chance! Good luck and have fun!

In the next few days alternate between long workouts (4 miles?) and sprint work. During the sprint work you could try something like half the track at a run, half at a job, repeat 4 times.
There's not a whole lot you can do with only a week left.
Be sure to rest the day before the race.

I expect almost no one that answers this question actually runs. I run a mile in 5:10, which isn't spectacular, but pretty good. I'm more of a long distance runner. I run more 5-15 K's than just a mile.
Ok, first there's nothing you can really do to improve your time in only a week. It takes months to improve your cardio.
The only advice i can give you, is run to a rythme.
Pick a leg, I use my left, but makes no difference cause you may switch in the middle of the run.
Every other time my left foot hits the ground, I breath in. Every other time, I breath out. Work at doing that rythmatically. Meaning, breath in two steps, breath out two steps. Every time that leg hits the ground you should breath in or out.
That will give you plenty of air. But, work on deeper breaths over time.
If your already doing that.......Your pretty screwed, sorry. Like i said there's nothing you can really do to improve your time so shortly.

if you want to race a fast mile, you're going to need to run farther than a mile in preparation for it.
A general rule of thumb is that, to be able to race a distance effectively, you must be capable of running twice as much.
Meaning, for your training runs, you should be running 2 miles. This way, when you run the mile, it will seem like you're running a very short distance
oh and for the love of god do not wear ankle weights when you run... that is so bad for your legs... ugh just please do not do that. it may sound like a good idea, but it's just awful for your legs

get some weights and put them on your ankles..run workouts with them...you can go into a swimming pool(the shallow end, of course) also and put those weights on your ankles to condition your legs....this makes your legs quick...make sure you don't weigh yourself down with heavy foods...eat very lightly hours before the race..like veggies or a V8..when you run..keep your body straight up, arching your back slightly, let your arms flow with full swing next to your body and make larger steps...great luck!!!........haha, just a suggestion...Dre O
