The Nemitz and the Stennis are claimed to be in the area now and the "BIG E" aka Enterprise is on the way.

Will they keep all three there or not? Who will leave? Reports vary with some saying the Stennis is leaving and some saying the Nimitz is leaving.

That's odd because the US continues to deny they are going to increase the carrier count to three. They are even reports that they may go back down to one.

Okay I am a navy spouse and my husband is on one of those carriers so I know the answer. I find it intresting to hear other beliefs and feed back which most is based on speculation. Telling which carriers are in the gulf and so forth is not divulging sensitive information because it is all over the news. LOL

Hang on there Army Girl I spent 6 years in the army myself and nothing I MEAN NOTHING I have posted here in the least tells any infomation that is not posted all over the frecking news. So don't even go there with me. All of my information comes from our FRG which is allowed to give us certain info. We all know and are preached to on a daily basis about OPSEC and due to the fact that I've been there. Don't mistake me for some types of military family members who might disclose dangerous information. I want my husband to make it home. I was just asking peoples opinions hence the do you believe not asking for secure infomation that I already have.

Three carriers in the area is possible. The Gulf region covers a lot of area. During Desert Shield/Storm, there were about 4 or 5 in the 'Gulf region'.

I was on a carrier in the Red Sea and launched planes that were a part of the first strikes. A carrier doesn't have to sit just over the horizon to be a threat. The pilots may have to spend more time in the cockpit, but they can reach their targets.

I didn't know Iran had aircraft carriers. Now that's a new one for me. I was under the impression that only the US, Britain, and Russia had aircraft carriers that could be considered a real threat anyway. Iran has maybe 3-5 ships capable of carrying more than 2 helicopter at same time, but that's about it. Their whole Navy might be considered stiff competition to a couple of US frigates, but a whole carrier battle group...? LOL They would get their butts handed to them in bite sized pieces on a platter. Even their submarine fleet is pretty much Kilo Class diesel.

As far as OPSEC goes, this was on the news and in the newspapers. One of the articles I read even mentioned a time frame for which carriers would be in the region.

GO NAVY!!!!

Regardless of whether a family member is on one the the carriers that are "speculated" to be in the Gulf, keep in mind that there are thousands more brothers, fathers, uncles and grandpas serving on that ship. There are opposing forces that monitor internet traffic, the phones we use to call home, our email conversations and blogs like this one. That is why OPSEC (Operations security) is important to mission success. Maybe there is just one ship in the gulf, maybe 5. The point is that Iraq is not the only threat in the middle east. Iran has naval carriers out to sea as well...several carriers. They want to know how much ammo to bring to the fight. If ever there is a fight...keep in mind that they dont know what we have unless we tell them. In which case, you can kiss your husband goodbye. The media reports what the Public Affairs Defense officer tells them. They satisfy questions in ways that will not be a detriment to the mission. Keeping in mind however, that they don't tell them about EVERYTHING that sails away. As a deployed servicemember whose specialty/job is to provide defense/protection for our coalition forces' ships at sea from a land-based operations area, I urge you not to make my job more difficult. Loose lips sink ships.

We deploy carrier strike groups to areas where they are needed and when they are needed. Telling you anything beyond that is considered to be divulging essential elements of friendly information and violates operational security.
