Considering buying a USED car and have narrowed it down to a choice of 2 (very different!)
a) Volkswagon Golf GTI MK3 16V (around 1996)
or
b) Suzuki softtop (around 1998/9)

Considerations - comments please!
motorway and town driving
For use for trips to the tip
Safety - as have 2 kids to carry
Want some fun too!
Value for money
Performance
Reliability
Running costs
Suggested alternatives - sensible ones only!
Thanks

definitely the golf. I have had a few and they are fun cars, fab to drive, cope with all kinds of driving conditions. do check the insurance costs for them both before making your decision, this may be a deciding factor. golf very well made. try a mag like What Car? which has details of all cars, new and 2nd hand. you can compare running costs/safety/depreciation etc.

We hired a Suzuki on our last holiday. wickedly fun to drive.
Parts are cheap unlike the Golf, Although the Golf is probably the Safest for kids. The Suzuki is however Loud but the 4 wheel drive is great fun. We took the down the beach in Cyprus.

Overall
Definitely the Suzuki..

Choose the Suzuki only if off-road ability is important to you, and you can accept the compromises in performance, economy, handling and safety for the off-road ability.

Volkswagen has a lot better reliability than a Suzuki, so get the GTI!

Suzuki... GOOD.... as can go (sort of) of road, your high and you can enjoy this summer with the top off. BAD... as its a suzuki, hard on fuel, not as 'nippy' as a golf, not as reliable as a VW.
Golf.... GOOD.... reliable, sporty, looks alright, goes alright, parts are cheaper, will hold its value longer. BAD....insurance can be high.

Maybe go half way and get an astra convertible? The feel of a convertible and the sport of a golf. Good comprimise

If you are a hairdresser, then the Suzuki. Otherwise the Golf. Soft tops tend to get vandalised and Ins.Co's. do not like them for they are easy to steal.
