I think i know what your problem is.
you are trying to learn as many words as possible, aren't you?
besides that you are trying to learn the meaning.
you are doing all this wrongly.
it has no use to learn the meaning of a word.
when you were a kid, did you learn the meaning? or you trans kated it to your own baby language??
of course not.
the secret to learn efectevely is relating an image to that word.
i know it is a little confusing, but let me explain you.
get two of your friend and ask them to draw anything you want. suach as a chair, a table, a house, a tree. do no t let them see each other drawing.
when they finish, check their work and compare them.
you'll see that each one is different from each other's even different from the idea you have about the object.
if you rekate the word to an image it'll be easier for you to remember.
that is the way we learn when we are growing.
we do no t lear definitions.
the second thing is practice it. you know,"use it or loose it"
write some sentences using those word to reinforce the learning proccess.
i know you are not a native english speaker, it takes time but it's no t impossible.
if i can be of help, e-mail me.
good luck.

It doesn't mean you aren't smart or that others are smarter. It simply means that you haven't had a much exposure as others. And....you're not a word freak/nerd/geek like I am. I'm betting that there are a lot of things you remember that others don't. That just happens to be your strength while other people are strong at words or numbers or whatever.
To improve your vocabulary takes some study. Barnes & Noble and Amazon, etc. have some good vocabulary study guides. What I used to do was if someone said a word I didn't understand or I read one that I didn't, I'd write it down. Then I'd look it up in several dictionaries (to see if they all agreed on the meaning and general usage). Then I would write a sentence or two. Then I would write the word several times over and over while saying the meaning. Yeah, I know. I'm a geek. But it works.
Good luck! Remember the more you read, the more you learn. Ask someone you trust and admire for their vocabulary skill to mentor you. I've asked people to correct me before when we are in private. There's nothing like immediate feedback. Of course, you have to remember that you asked for this and not get mad! LOL
Have fun.

Spelling is a problem too I see. If you don't know the meaning of a word. Ask. A lot of older people who are educated will be more than happy to INFORM you on what some words you don't know means. Besides that. It's just a matter of you. Some people can remember things easier than others.

Okay...if you truly wish to learn to use bigger words I have an idea. Take a dictionary and find one word that you wish to learn. For a few days try using that one word in a few different sentences so that it will lodge in your brain. It takes a while to build a vocab this way, but most of the time you don't forget what it means as you gave your mind time to soak it all in and not tried to throw a lot of new things at it at one time.

It's all practice. Anything you don't use, you eventually forget. You'd even forget your own name if you didn't use it for long enough.
That said, you could probably be helped greatly by learning Latin. There are a lot of English words that come from Latin, and when you learn Latin you learn the root that they come from, and makes it much easier to remember the English word. Plus, most of the words from Latin are what you call "big words". Besides, Latin is cool.

I agree with everyone who suggested you learn one new word from the dictionary and practice, practice, practice. However, while you are learning, never try to "fake it" by using big words that you don't know. You will sound intelligent if you use words properly, even if they are all small words.

Its pointless to try and memorize words purposely. What you should do is try and read more. Every time you come across a word that you do not recognize look it up at www.dictionary.com. Spend a minute looking at the definition and thinking about what it means. In no time you will have expanded your vocabulary(lexicon) dramatically.
Try looking up lexicon to start.

The part of the brain that you use to read, to speak, and to write, are all part of the same area. If you increase participation in one area you increase participation in all three. Read more, write more. Pick a word or two a day and use them in your normal conversations then you will increase your vocabulary.+=

When you use words in everyday conversation, they become easier to remember. Try this: when you learn a new word, immediately say it out loud in three different sentences and try to use it throughout the day.
