A lot of reasons. Shame and fear are the biggest factors though. There is this uncertainty of how people will react if you talk about it.
Keeping quiet about it doesn't work though. It just eats you up on the inside, but some people think that's less scary than what will happen if they tell.

I was abused by my stepfather when I was a kid. My parents had me to tell the usual stories - "I fell down the stairs," "My sister and I got into a fight," etc. No one ever questioned it and sometimes I wonder why.
I think some people like to believe the best about others. They don't want to believe that someone could hurt a child or their wife or their grandmother or whoever.
Others just want to avoid confrontation or confusion.
I recently found out that a friend of the family had her suspicions, but she wasn't sure, and she didn't want to get my stepfather in trouble if he was innocent. That's the kind of allegation that sticks with you.
And of course, there will always be people who think that it isn't any of their business.

it's unfair to say that all or the majority of abuse victims don't like talking about it because it varies from person to person on how they deal with the past and move on, some people are open about it and others prefer to keep that kind of information to themselves. it's like saying anyone who's ever suffered abuse in their life will probably be scarred for life and miserable.... it's simply not true. some people just find it easier than others

All kinds of reasons.
Embarrassment, shame, family secret, blackmail,I could go on and on.People tend to look down on people that have been abused(for what reason I don't know). And some people that claim to have been abused are often called liars.
It gives a person nightmares, phobias, distrust in people. Not to mention negative feelings. It causes alot of problems. But on the flip side, bringing it out into the open can cause alot more problems.Depending where your from, who, when, possible family ties,so on so on.
Best thing sometimes is to just leave the scene and not look back.
When I had had enough and moved out I sat on my floor and prayed and cried.God did take care of it.

because telling someone you have been abused can make you feel like a victim, and you might be afraid that they would laugh at you or not take it seriously.
people might be afraid to investiage suspected abuse in case the person is innocent and they get them into trouble for no reason. some people find it embarassing or they might feel that the situation is too big for them to handle on their own, so they hope that someone else might deal with it.
and some people just don't want to know, it could be that they don't want to know because it hurts to face the truth, or they just don't care and don't want to get involved.

if someone has been abused some are too scarred to talk about it because they think they will get more abuse from their partner if he finds out .but not talking about it can lead to depression and depression can lead to breaking the law, such as killing themselves or someone else.
so IF there is someone that is scarred to talk, talk to someone that you can trust to not say anything too your partner.

they know that others think that abuse is bad, so they need to keep their dignity. kind of like that mr. brooks movie: no one ever knows...
it works for them, but not for the kid. then again, they obviously don't care!
