Because Atheists believe we humans are the alpha and the omega. They believe they are the elite and we believers are silly, superstitious, ignorant, blind followers of the non-existent. Note I said "believe" because they follow a system of beliefs with not one shred or proof to back up their statements. AND they say Atheism isn't a religion LOL. Yes they are a self-centered, self contradicting lot aren't they. Be careful what you say to them though most are violently fanatical in their beliefs, anger being their preferred expression. The one word that they cannot comprehend is "humility".

I am not atheist but my friends are.
Do you believe in the tooth fairy or Santa Clause? If the answer is no, probably the same reasons you don't believe in those is the same reason an Atheist does not believe in God. There is no proof. The only way you can know God is faith.
The only reason I am not an atheist is because I am not content believing that when we die we just die and that's it. Besides that, what most atheists told me was "mob mentality" I know that God was calling me..I was at a church where they only spoke the sermon and sang in Spanish. Yet for some reason why I saw my friend "shaking" (screaming and jumping up and down because she was touched by the holy spirit) I started crying. I could not stop crying. They say it's because of mob mentality..no offense to my friends..but I KNOW now it wasn't..I was trying to hold back my tears and I could not stop it. Years ago no one knew how to make a tv..and years later we now have them everywhere. How do we know that someday God will reveal himself even more..so I hope that no matter how much atheists teach you you will stay loyal to our savior..although I respect them of course..

What do YOU mean when YOU say spirit? Casper the fiendly ghost? I don't think there would be much difference: spirit=essence. Seriously, this is a stupid question.
When you are done abstracting these things from things in the real world and you are done posing stupid pre-judged hypothetical questions on the 'beliefs' of atheists/agnostics, then you might be qualified to ask an intelligent question.
It is a mistake to dismiss the spirituality of someone who does not believe as you do.

Why would you say there is such thing as a spirit? Are you basing your belief on the beliefs of ancient civilizations, as a justification? The energy we have is released into the ground and recycled into other material - the energy we have is what's commonly perceived as a "spirit" - a form of energy.
Ancient civilizations weren't taught that energy is recycled, that it's in everything - they thought of this as a spirit, something that keeps someone alive and well. This was actually, later found to be the energy invested in us all.

It depends on how you define spirit.
If by spirit you mean an imortal component that encompasses your memories and consciousness and can survive independently of the body, then no, spirits do not and can not exist, despite who may believe in them. As far as the number of people who may believe otherwise, that has never been a factor in determining truth.
If by spirit you mean "mind" or "consciousness", then yes, that exists and is not a material object. It is a complex and dynamic system of information. However it is dependent upon and supported by the brain, and when the brain dies, it ceases to exist.

If you ask those people to define what a spirit is, you'll probably get different answers.
Atheists don't deny that there is a spirit or life force or whatever you want to call it within us. I don't know where you got the idea that they did. The difference is atheists don;t believe that the spirit survives death or that there is an almighty spirit.

It's quite simple, really. There's no evidence for it. If you've ever seen an optical illusion, if you've ever been fooled by a magician or player of 3-card monty, you know how easy it is for human beings to delude themselves.
There is growing evidence that the brain is capable of doing all the things that were once assigned to the "spirit" or "soul." The neuron activity has been seen in moral decisions, hallucinations, and "spiritual experiences." As a matter of fact, one of the most predictable ways to ensure you have a spiritual experience is to allow a neurosurgeon to implant a probe into the appropriate area of your brain. When they start the electrical stimulation, you'll fee like you're in the presence of God. Instead you're in the presence of Con-Edision.

Because that would be in the realm of the supernatural and as such implausible, just because people have believed in spirits for centuries does not mean they exist, people believed the Earth was flat for centuries too.

Just because everybody came up with a somewhat similar idea (thousands of years ago) doesn't mean that those beliefs don't need to be proven. As soon as lots of people start seeing proof of the existence of a spirit, I'll reconsider. But so far all anybody's given me is a bunch of old stories with absolutely no hard evidence.

At one time, the majority of people believed the earth was flat.
At one time, the majority of people believed the earth was the center of the universe.
At one time, the majority of people believed that disease was caused by evil spirits.
At one time, many people believed that African Americans were 3/5 of a person.
Truth is not a democracy. Just because the majority of people believe something doesn't make is true.

It depends what you mean by "spirit". I'm sure you are thinking about the supernatural "spirit" that lives eternally after you die. No I don't believe in it because there's no proof of such a thing.
