Do Hindus have to have children or is this a cultural thing?

Also, if this is true, why must a woman produce a son?

Hindus are sexual too just like all other beings! How is having a child cultural? A son is thought to be desirable to continue the clan like in most ancient beliefs nothing else!

no..

male preference is prevalent not only in Hindu cultures, but also in many other cultures around the world.. like under the one-child policy in China..

why? because daughters are considered "economic liabilities" who need to be married off, whereas sons can be relied on to provide for the parents at old age..

male preference also prevails because many families desire a male heir who can inherit the family property.. and carry forward the family line (name)..

indeed it is sad a fate for many a woman!

Hindu religion says "Having children is mandatory"-it is not cultural-those who have no children -the religious texts say will go to a "Hell"called"PUT"-to escape the hell is to have Putra/Putri= son(s) or daughter(s)--Son is given the right to perform the last rites of his parents, because after the marriage daughters will go to another(her husband's) family.
