Actually, it's supposed to be twice a day. And, it's after meals, before you brush. That way you get all the food and bacteria out from between your teeth, then can brush it away.

When you clean your teeth you want to do so with maximum effect. Since the longest part of your day when you are not eating is usually in the evening sometime until you have breakfast in the morning, it makes this the best time to floss. Therefore, once you are done eating or snacking in the evening you can floss and brush. Your teeth are now free of bacteria and sugar until the next time you eat.
Just think about it, if you floss in the morning after breakfast, how long is it until you have a snack...2 hours. Then what another 2 hours and lunch. 5 hours later dinner. Then an evening snack and then you sleep for 8 hours get up and have breakfast and then, finally you floss again.
In this scenario your teeth are not clean for all that long are they?
But floss in the evening or before bed, and your teeth are at least clean for the 8 hours you sleep.
I hope this makes sense to you.

I just got my yearly check up. I know it is supposed to be twice a year, but I had a dental cleaning and she asked when the last time I had a cleaning cause I had barely any plaque. I told her 5 years. The hygenist was amazed (I have a new doctor) and went to go get the doctor. He said, yup, that's what happens when you really do floss your teeth everyday. I do every evening and bring extra floss with me in my purse in case something gets stuck in my teeth and go to the restroom to get it out. You want white teeth? Use a prerinse, floss, and then brush every tooth back and front softly about the time it takes to listen to your favorite song. I am 48 with a beautiful smile. Your teeth can make you look older or younger. Make them younger.

After you eat, I'd think. That's when you get bits of food stuck between your teeth.
