You might here that Mormons "Pray for the Dead" Mormons don't pray for the dead. The do work Vicariously for the dead. Vicarious means doing something for others that they can't do for themselves. Christs Atonement was Vicarious. He did something that we could not do for ourselves. He saved us from death and hell if we are but willing to have faith in him, repent of our sins, and keep his commandments. When Christ was on the earth during his mortal ministry he said That unless a man is born of water and the spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (John 3:5) God does not lie. His commandments are written in stone. In order to recieve eternal life we must be baptized. So what happens to all those people who never had a chance to be baptized? They were good people who never had a chance to hear about Christ and his gospel. Are they going to hell? What kind of loving God would do that? God is a fair and loving God and is aware of all of his children. He has provided a way for them to receive the ordinances of baptism even though they were never baptized.
The early Christians a concept called baptism for the Dead. (See 1 Corinthians 15:29) "else what shall the do which are baptized for the dead if the dead rise not at all, why are they then baptized for the dead"? The corinthians were practicing baptism for the dead but not completely understanding the concept of Christ's resurection. So the Apostle Paul like he always does set them straight. The ordinance of baptism for the dead was lost when Christ's original church fell apart and broke off into other churches. There were no more Apostles to run the church and that is why it fell. See Ephesians 2:20.
Christs church was restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith and also the ordinance of baptism for the dead.
When a person is baptized for the dead he is baptized in and behalf for a person who never was baptized by proper priesthood authority. That person who's spirit still exists has the oppuritunity to accept the ordinance of baptism and all the beautiful covenants that go with it in a place called the spirit world. If they accept; Christs atonement is applied to them and they receive a remission of sins after they vicariously recieve the gift of the holy ghost. So to answer you question we don't pray for them, we do work for them. You can't get a shadow wet. the ordinance must me done with someone who has a mortal body.

Every Christian on earth did until recent times. It is only the unauthorized manmade denominational churches of the past few hundred years that have rejected this core Christian belief, along with many others. The Apostles wouldn't have recognized Protestantism as Christianity.

America's first Muslim congressman has provoked outrage by apparently comparing President George W Bush to Adolf Hitler and hinting that he might have been responsible for the September 11 attacks.
Addressing a gathering of atheists in his home state of Minnesota, Keith Ellison, a Democrat, compared the 9/11 atrocities to the destruction of the Reichstag, the German parliament, in 1933. This was probably burned down by the Nazis in order to justify Hitler's later seizure of emergency powers.
"It's almost like the Reichstag fire, kind of reminds me of that," Mr Ellison said. "After the Reichstag was burned, they blamed the Communists for it, and it put the leader [Hitler] of that country in a position where he could basically have authority to do whatever he wanted."
