meant...You did NOT agree.... SOME people take it wrong...or should i just say..."I see"...so there is no MISUNDERSTANDING...?????.

just finish the sentence, say "i understand your point"

Usually, talking to someone Japanese has the same problem. There, to understand is to agree. Here, they mean different things. For some reason people think that if you understand what they are saying is that you agree with them. Of course this is not the case

Saying that you understand about something doesn't mean that you agree with it. But you need to explain it a bit further. You can say that you understand what he/she is saying but you don't agree with it.

Yes, I understand means I simply understand what you mean.

However, it can show some sympathy or empathy.

That is why some people might believe it means (I understand and I'm with you)..

So just like suggested.. Simply say (I truly understand.. however, this and that).

How about "I understand where you're coming from but I don't necessarily agree" or "I understand but I guess we will have to agree to disagree."

Depending on who you're talking to and how much that person knows you, you may have to qualify "I understand."

You could try "I understand but I don't agree."
