WHOA..I had no idea anyone else thought like me..
I used to have a parakeet or budgie whatever as well. It was so cute but I felt so guilty keeping it in a cage. If a bird was meant to be locked up then how come whenever I left the cage doors open it always wanted to fly? Birds especially didn't ask for their wings to be clipped either. Pets are like a metaphor for my childhood-I wasn't even allowed to go outside to play with my friends or talk on the phone in privacy. That's especially why I do not keep any pets at all anymore.. Cages are like jail to them perhaps..Birds are meant to be free.

We always had bird growing up, and what we did was had an extra room built on the home to house the birds. Their habitat was about the size of a bedroom, they could fly around and we could go in and hold the birds. My grandmother had done the same thing. We had parakeets mostly, and we taught them to talk, and whistle different tunes. I really enjoy birds as pets, I don't like the thought of keeping them caged up all the time.

It's ok to let them out of their cage as long as they are supervised and you make sure there are no plants and other things the bird can eat or play with that will make them sick.
Supervised play time and a few minutes of training will bond the bird to you quicker. You must first teach the bird to step up on a stick, this will make getting the bird back home easier. Birds are like kids at bed time, once they get out they
will play with you and fly around some more to make you give up and let them stay out. Keep making the bird step up on the stick and bringing it to the cage. The bird will soon realize
you are the boss and go home.Praise the bird happily and give the bird a treat . Set rules and limit where your bird can
and cannot go. this will make cleaning poop quicker and easier.

It is cruel to leave the bird in a cage all day, but it's also cruel to let them fly around because it only takes one stupid mistake by a guest and poof your bird is lost outside, only to die. Eithe rthat or they'll fly into a window/mirror/wall and braek a bone and die. Birds should get AT LEAST 2 hours outside of their cage, with wings clipped. They need a lot of attention from their owners, and if they don't get those things, then yes it is cruel. Sadly most bird owners don't know how much attention birds really need.

I don't think that keeping birds as pets is cruel. Mine have VERY large cages, get any toys they want, and get to come out for at least a few hours every day. Mine aren't allowed to fly just because they can be injured by flying inside the house.

i don't find it cruel to have a bird as a pet, it would be more cruel to let a hand reared anything out into the wild. We do let both of our parrots out for a certain amount of hours a day, if not all day.

I don't think i'm bieng cruel to my parakeet at all
I wake up in the morning he gets un covered and his cage door gets opened, his door is normally open from 10am to 3am (during the summer) when schools in its 5:30 am to 9 pm and he can go any where BUT THE KITCHEN, he has snuck in there and got him self corned between the fridge and the wall and after i got him from there he flew off (his wings are clipped) and went between the wall and the stove
so there is no more kitchen time for my tweety! but his normal daily activity is after his cage door has been open for a few mins he'll come and stand on the frame of it if my kids are doing thier exercise he'll watch them and just keep looking back and forth at each kid -theres been times he was still inside his cage and it looked like he was doing exercise right along with my kids (which was just down right funny to watch)
then he'll fly out make one clean trip around the living room( i dont have a big living room) and then its on to the top of his cage where his play gym is and he'll sit up there and play or just watch tv or watch us, then he'll go back into his cage when he's ready to eat, and he'll come back out when he's ready i've had him for 2 months (and i'm going by the markings on his head the stripes - he's around 3 months old or so) and he does know Step up - u don't even have to tell him we just put our finger by his chest and he automatically steps up we talk to him all day, he whistles, or chirps and we'll whistle back , he likes "chirping" to the birds outside(he's inside they're outside)
but what i think is cruel is the people who buy any bird no matter how small or how big it is and leaves it n a cage all day for its entire life, never talks to it, never interacts with it the people who get them more as a "trophy" that really irks me
but as long as they're let out to fly around, and play outside the cage, and have interaction with people every day i see no harm in it all
my kids will even go up to tweety when he's on his play gym and tell him Step up and he'll get on thier finger for a few mins before he flys back to his Perch on the gym
But my kids are still little (7 and 9 1/2) and his little feet doesnt really fit on thier little fingers very well so they're only allowed to get him to step up if me or my b/f is right beside them So that way if anything should go wrong we can stop it before it actually happens

When I was younger our bird flew where it could. Sometimes it flew into mirrors, which is sad. I got a bird, myself. I use to clip it's wings. It would flutter, and walk from place to place. I covered its cage at night. In the morning I could just call him and he'd come out, walk across the couch back to my bedroom and flutter to the bed and get up to see me. I had to clip him. He would hear me come home and fly right toward the front door. But, now I believe birds belong in the wild. People need to keep their cats inside, so they quit killing all the birds.

well, my parakeets are kept in a cage. they do have a playpen thing they can come out on. i think it is rather cruel to let them just fly around the house to crash into walls, or get stuck behind things.
