Fantastic question i happy to see people are looking after there health well this is the case. You should drink while you eat because the food does not digest properly leaving air bubbles in the stomach which then leaves to wind and indigestion. and in some cases. Cases a person to throw up because of the stomach lining pressure.

"They" used to say that you would gain weight if you drank anything while eating. Apparently these people didn't know about science. You gain weight by taking in more calories than you use. Any other weight gained would be temporary water weight.
I do know people who do not let their small children drink while eating because the child would only drink and get too full to eat enough for proper nutrition.
Personally I could not eat if I did not have anything to drink.

Well you are partially correct. You are not supposed to drink anything room temp or colder. This is because cold drinks thickens the fats, making it harder to digest etc... What you can drink is hot tea. Hot tea liquidfies the fats making it easier to digest etc... To your second question usually about an hour when you have digested it.

i heard this growing up but never paid it much attention. i suppose it could be a old mother's tale or have some scientific backing. but nevertheless, it is not life-threatening.

because the liquids dilute the acids in your stomach and slow down the digestion.
