The hair will fall out over an area and the skin may or may not look red. It's tiny mites under the skin that cause it, and it's treatable. One of our guys had that happen and we used the cream the vet gave us to help it heal up.

Sometimes it gets a crusty scab on it if the cat keeps licking at the area, making the skin raw there, it can itch them enough that they don't want to stop cleaning it.

If the mange isn't treated it could spread, so being proactive and taking care of it soon as you get it identified is the best way to go. It's definately treatable.
