That rule was intended for the impoverished masses to follow, not the rich and ruling elite. It was designed to ensure an abundant supply of slave fodder for exploitation by the upper classes. When a slave procreates, the owner becomes richer.

To answer your last question first, they can't force their beliefs on anyone else. That is, mostly they can't. In the United States, with five catholics now sitting on the Supreme Court, we're likely to see a more conservative / religious bias in their decisions.
To answer your first two-part question, I suspect that most catholics -- at least in the western world -- actually have no problem with at least some of these things, despite what the church tells them to think. The church hierarchy makes a lot of noise in an effort to keep the flock in line, and will never admit that they've already failed to do so.

Stop bloody generalising! Not ALL catholics hate birth control - lots of them use it. It IS against the teachings of the Catholic church but people do what they want to do not what the church says they should do. Don't know where you got this view re forcing beliefs on non-catholics and atheists. Personally never heard of that.

i am actually insulted by the fact that some think that catholics still believe we are in the "stone age". in fact, in some aspects we would be better off in the stone age, because many of the filthy things that go one in this world did not go one then! i believe this as a devout catholic, not born in the stone age, but less than 20 years ago. catholics do not approve of birth control because you are, in essence, "playing God". there are other ways for preventing pregnancy which i will not discuss, but if you really don't want kids, keep you legs closed!!! catholics do not condem those who have sex, they we just belief that premarital sex is wrong. if you do not love the person enough to marry them, then why engage in something as serious as that, especially considering the possible emotional and physical consequences! as for gay men and lesbians, catholics do not hate them because it goes against what Jesus said, "Love your neighbor as yourself". in fact, as a teenager and devout catholic, i have several EXTREMELY close friends who i love almost as family who prefer the same sex. whosoever hates these people is just rude. catholics only step in when they try to push gay and lesbian marriages, which is morally and ethically wrong, because marriage is only between a man and a woman. and as for stem cell research, catholics have a problem with EMBRYONIC stem cell research because it involves yet again "playing God" and then killing an innocent life which didn't ask to be created. the same goes for abortion. not only is it wrong, but it is also dangerous. a woman can die during the procedure, and often suffers from depression and possibly suicidal thoughts afterwords. so, to answer the question, catholics DO NOT FORCE their beliefs on non catholics, but they try to help everyone see their point of view in the hope of making the world a better place. i will leave you with this: can you imagine looking at yourself in the mirror knowing that you murdered someone who didn't ask to be born, and who could have possibly contributed to society in a way that could have changed the world, such as finding a cure for cancer, alzheimers, or end world hunger?

Catholics are like most religious types- utter hypocrites. They condemn people having sex,.... while busily screwing everything they can lay their hands on. Well look the pedo priests, who have been busy indulging themselves in choir boys for decades. Only recently the scale of it has been exposed with the Catholic Church having to pay millions in compensation. Yeah fine example to morals these Catholics and the rest of the religious nutcases.
Long live atheism!

They love making babies.
They force their beliefs on everyone else because they think they're the only right ones, without leaving room for anyone else to have a say. Banning abortion, homosexuality, birth control, the "morning after" pill, that's exactly like me saying, "I don't really like going to church, I think it's wrong. So I don't think anyone else should have the option to go to church or not."
Just because I don't like something doesn't give me or anyone else the right to take the option away from anyone else.
******* selfish.

Many religious people are against birth control. I would not say that all Catholics hate it, though. That's being too general. Many of the Christian sects are against what you speak of because they believe it's against their teachings, but not all of them have that point of view.

13. Why is the Church Obsessed with Sex? (Pgs 41- 43)
Questions like this usually refer to the Church’s keen interest in upholding sexual morality. To be sure, the Church does feel an urgent need to uphold the truth about sex. Why? For all the reasons we’ve noted about how important the issue of sex really is.
Sexuality is not just something biological but concerns the “innermost being of the human person. “
To the extent that our understanding of sexuality is skewed, so is our understanding of ourselves. Think how intertwined sex is with the mystery of life. Without sex there would be no life.
The deepest truth about sexuality actually reveals the deepest truth about life. It’s this: we are called through the gift of God’s grace to share in God’s life by loving as he loves - and this call is stamped into our very bodies as male and female; it’s stamped into our sexuality. Paraphrasing John Paul II: rediscovery of the nuptial meaning of the body always means rediscovery of the meaning of the whole of existence, the meaning of life. That’s why it’s such an urgent matter.
The sexual urge taps into the most powerful drives and desires of the human heart. Depending on how they’re directed, these drives and desires have the power for great good or great evil. In short, as created by God, the sexual urge was given to us as a “love instinct” that leads to life. But when it’s cut off from the source of love and life (God), it tends to become a “lust instinct” that leads to death.
Sexual attitudes and behaviors then have the power to orient not only individuals but entire nations and societies toward respect for life - or toward its utter disregard. To be sure, when lust is woven into the fabric of a society, that society can be nothing but a “culture of death.”
Sounds exaggerated? Our nation alone murders over four thousand preborn babies every day
In order to satisfy its lusts. And that’s only the beginning. Disordered sexuality is the “Pandora’s Box” that unleashes a host of societal evils: from the poverty of “fatherless” families and the staggering proliferation of sexually transmitted diseases (some fatal, such as AIDS), to newborns found in dumpsters and increased violence among teens - all these can be traced to the breakdown of the sexual mores that hold the family intact as the fundamental cell of society. As sexual attitudes and and behaviors go, so goes marriage. As marriage goes, so goes the family. As the family goes, so goes society. Paraphrasing John Paul II: human life, its dignity and its balance, depends at every moment of history and at every point on the globe on the proper ordering of love between the sexes.
We will never build a civilization of love and culture of life unless we first live according to the truth of our sexuality. If the Church is “obsessed” with sex, it’s because she’s “obsessed” with upholding the dignity and balance of human life and the plan of God for humanity that our sexuality is meant to reveal.

Force their beliefs? Well it's a free country here in America and you don't have to do what they say if you don't want to. If they bother you then you must be convicted about something. If not, then politely ignore them.
