Lot of confusion is being made for you by those who have no knowledge of Indian legal system. Now first of all you being a American citizen can marry this Indian girl in India according the Provisions of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 if you both happen to be Hindus by religion & get this marriage registered under section 8 of this Act by the Marriage Registrar who shall issue a marriage certificate that will be LEGAL & VALID EVERY WHERE IN THE WORLD INCLUDING INDIA & AMERICA. Such marriage can also take place if you are not a Hindu but convert to Hindu religion, get a proper certificate of this conversion & then marry according to Hindu form of marriage. Now if you happen to be Christian by religion & this girl is Hindu by religion then you can marry under the India Christian Marriage Ac, 1872 before the Marriage Officer/Registrar appointed under this Act & get a marriage certificate regarding such marriage that too will be a LEGAL & VALID CERTIFICATE. Here let me tell you the Indian Christian Marriage Act allows marriage between a Christian & a non Christian. The Third option with you too get married in India is under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 before the Marriage Officer/Registrar & get a marriage certificate of such marriage that too is LEGAL & VALID CERTIFICATE. Under this Act you both can be belonging to any religion but here you have to have take permission from your Embassy to give you a no objection certificate for getting married under this Act. Now coming to your main question regarding what type of visa you should apply for all this? Well any visa will do even the Tourist Visa but make it a point to get visa for not less then two months as the legal formalities etc in such marriage may take that much time & you should not be short of time on this regard. So best is to get visa of maximum time you can get so a well planned marriage can be arranged & done in a legal & valid form & you get a valid marriage certificate which you will be using for the purpose of immigration of your wife to USA.

There are four kinds of visas; tourists, business, education or work. When you apply for a visa, in the column "purpose of visit" you have to write there as tourist, visiting places and perhaps the names of cities (if the visa officer had just arguments with his wife) otherwise you can go any where in India if you are not exceeding your stay more than 3 months. They are not bothered what you do in these three months.
Keep one thing in mind, you cannot bring back your wife with you on your return journey. You will have to apply in advance through your Home Office with necessary papers about your job, your earnings, your house, etc. only then residential visa will be issued by the American Embassy in India. Normally this process takes two to three months. The best way is take the particulars of your would-be wife and apply before hand prior to your departure from States lest your are held up in India. Your Home Office can direct you on this matter. I wish you good luck with your wedding and safe return to your home.

Hi there,Well I am an Indian and my husband is a British,so it was not all that easy to think you can go over and just get married.
you will need to get a good lawyer and then you will have to apply for permission to get married and then you need to have a residency permit to do so,
if you are already engaged to be married then your feance'can have the peper work in place, you don't need a special visa to go out there to get married.
it will take you at least 3 to 4 week's to sort it all out.don't forget that if you give them a good tip you will be able to get it through even quicker.
don't think your bribing anyone out there it's just that they will be made up to do it for you if you take care of them, the only one you will not be able to tip is the judge.
you will not be able to get married in church or a temple untill your married in court.once your court married you can take that cerificate to the church or temple and proside to the white wedding or the treditonal red temple wedding.
I wish you all the luck in the world and all the happyness,if you need any help send me an e mail and I will help you to the best.

yes you could get married with a tourist visa. the problem is going to be getting your indian wife BACK. she will need a visa to enter the states! that could take a long, long time. i would suggest talking to an immigration attorney - it is very complex, and takes a long time, and involves LOTS of paperwork. i base this on personal experience!
