There are parts of the heights that are great for middle class families, the part up by ft tyron park is real nice, closer to bdwy and 181 is heavily dominican. good local shops and some really good food (try the cuban chinese mmm good) If you live in the domincan area( after a few months once they get to know you) you will be treated like one of an extended family. (assuming you treat your neighbors well) As a woman I would not feel comfortable taking the subway home late at night, but I wouldn't hesitate to take a cab especially if the neighbors I know are hanging out in front of the building.

The Heights has a heavy Dominican population. Many ethnic stores and shops, all with a Latin flavor. If you are not Dominican or hispanic, you will be looked on as an outsider and a possible threat to their way of life. Meaning the real estate could escalate in price and the neighborhood could gentrify like Greenwich Village.

While I'm not that familiar with the neighborhood, people whose judgment I respect say that West of Ft. Washington Av is good & east is dicey, esp. at nite.
