It could be thyroid. Easily Treatable. I think a visit to the vet should be your first stop.

I had the same problem with my Beagle-Lab mix. It could be an allergic reaction to the food you feed her. Perscription dog food is what the vet will try to put her on, but it might not be necessary. I ended up getting the Holistic Canine Formula from Bench & Field. Don't know where you're at, but I get mine at Trader Joe's for about $10 per 6 lb bag. Then, just to ensure some added fat & protein are in it, I add some chicken broth to the food. My dog's been on this diet now for two years and the itching (and carpet chewing) have stopped.

Brush or comb the dog twice a day. If the coat is real thick, cut off some of the outer fur (about 1/4th inch) so the loose hair at skin level can fall off. Think of the itching as what you feel when you've had a haircut and the hair gets down your back--wouldn't you want someone to brush that off of you?

Your doggie could have some skin irritants.
I would try your local pet store and find out if they have any washes or lotions you can put on your pup to help with skin irritations.
Also, think back and try to remember if you've changed anything in your dog's life lately, like dog shampoo, food, etc. That could be the culprit.
If it persists, I would pay a visit to your vet to make sure it isn't something more serious.

He/she could have allergies. I would first take him to the vet and see what they say, and if its not allergies or fleas, there is a special kind of shampoo for dogs who have dry skin. Its medicated and you can buy it at any pet store.
