I really want an engagement ring from my boyfriend of one year. We have a month old son. But he said he is not the type of man who gives expensive gifts to his girlfriend. Not even to his ex wife. I'm very hurt.

You can not change who he is. But remind him that you are not just his girlfriend, you are the mother of his child.

You can't "make" your BF give you an engagement ring. If he has committed to you and asked you to marry him, then you should already have an engagement ring. If he has not made the committment to ask you to marry him, then it will be a matter of time until he asks you to marry him. When that time comes, he needs to have a ring ready for you. If you are looking for some one that will give you everything you want, such as expensive gifts, then maybe you are in a relationship that isn't going to work out for you.

It may make you mad to hear, but maybe you should reassess the things in your life and figure out if an expensive ring is more important than the love you have for him and your son.

Don't let a ring bother you enjoy what you have and who knows what the future will bring me and my boyfriend have been together for 9 1/2 years with a 4 year old son and were getting married in March 08 and I still don't have a ring but I am OK with it cause if he had an extra $1000 or $2000 I would much rather spend it on other things. Good luck to your relationship whichever way it goes.

I assume since you call him a "boyfriend" and not a "fiance" you're not engaged. An engagement ring is not just a "gift," it represents a huge committment. So you have several issues here:

1. Does he want to marry you?
2. If he does want to marry you, will he give you an engagement ring?
3. Is he so cheap with you in general that it's an issue in your relationship?

You need to figure out each issue separately. If #1 is no, then #2 is moot. Sounds like #3 could be an ongoing issue for you.

I mean no offense, but the way you phrased the question, it sounds like you're more interested in the ring than the committment. Best of luck to you.

You can't "make" him do anything.

And an engagement ring does not need to be expensive.

Love him for who he is, and don't try to make him buy you an expensive engagement ring.

Don't rush him! Dating one year with a one month old son already! Take your time. Enjoy each other.

Talk about it once in a while but not to the point of annoying him every time you want to talk about it.

I think a promise ring is a great idea. My boyfriend and I were in a long-distance relationship for the first year we were together. I found promise rings I liked online and he surprised me by saying he wanted one. I never thought he would wear a ring but he has never taken it off. We got simple matching bands that have the Celtic Eternity Knot on them. Some people ask him if he is married but he just replies that he wears it to show the world that he is committed to our relationship. I am also in my mid-twenties and he is in his thirties and we are just not at the wedding stage. If it is something he would wear, I think you should do it!

Um, maybe he doesn't want to marry you?

Sorry, I know I'll get "bad answer/thumbs down" for that one, but you have a 1 month son from a guy you have been with for a year, who also happens to have an ex-wife...and you are trying to figure out how to "make him" give you an engagement ring?

Guys are supposed to WANT to give an engagement ring - if you need to figure out how to "make him" give you one...then I'd say he isn't really thinking or planning on a wedding with you.

Like I said, I know I'll get lots of "thumbs down" for this answer...but you want an honest opinion on it - here it is.

Well, it wouldn't have to be expensive. It could be a simple gold band. It's not the price, it's the symbol behind it. It's the outward expression of commitment. Tell him that- find an inexpensive gold band online, show him and if he still has the same attitude, maybe you need to look further into your relationship.

You can find a nice gold band for under $100, maybe even under $50.

Many reality checks come in to plan once you have children. Unfortunately for the women in waiting, men will take their time. But once they make the final decision, it will be worth the wait.

Obviously if he was previously married, he does understand that it is a serious decision to make. Don't push the issue because you may just end up as his 'ex-wife' if he truly isn't ready for the commitment.

He doesn't want to get married. I hate to be rude, but look at his wording. He doesn't give expensive gifts to girlfriends. Well, you aren't just a girlfriend anymore, you're the mother of his child. This isn't about the expense, this is about the fact that he doesn't want to get married. You need to sit down with him & have a serious convo. Decide from there what you want to do about the relatinoship. Good luck.

Tell him you are deeply hurt about his indifference toward you regarding you wanting an engagement ring. Is he trying to tell you something that you are not hearing? Tell him that you bore him a son, and you deserve what every other girl receives from her fiance and husband. Tell him that you want an engagement ring, and you want to get married. If he balks at this, I think you'd better re-evaluate your relationship with him. If you think he will be more generous when you are married, forget about that fantasy, as he will become more selfish and frugal.
