IDE THEIR MINDS!" What do you think of this new rule in retrospect to "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."?

Seems as though Jesus knew we would develop this someday, a Greater Work than he did in his rule.

Requires effort and imagination and communication. Yes it does. And you can never be perfect at it. It leaves one feeling like they might miss a mark and striving to hit that mark, they become aware that they need to try harder and find methods that make success in that endeavor more possible. We are all sinners, missing the mark of each other's expectations, surely. But wouldn't it be better to miss that mark with more Forgive Affirmed Spirit?

The problem with the Buddhist tenet "Do not do unto others as you would not want done unto you." is that while it claims to be a so-called "improvement" over the Golden Rule it puts you at the center of the universe. What I like is not necessarily what you like and what you isn't necessarily what I like.

It is only when we are willing to step down from being the center of the universe and put God there that things fit in the right order.

How would you like to be treated? If you were an "x" and the other person was a "y", then as an "x" you would like the "y" to see and respond to things as a "x".

We want the "y" to become something he is not, an "x". Therefore, we are to treat others as "y's" and not as we would like to be treated..."like a x."

To fulfill the law, we have to deny ourselves like Jesus did. And every knee shall bow and every tongue confess Jesus is Lord. It is just a matter of time before all will.

Some claim an improvement in the Platinum Rule: "Do unto others as THEY would have you do unto THEM." Unfortunately, this opens the door to greed & selfishness from them - it's not good to foster such traits in others.

I have read a wording of a Buddhist tenet as "Do not do unto others as you would not want done unto you." This improvement over the so-called Golden Rule is subtle but quite meaningful.

Adding the clause "as if you were inside their minds" would force the adherent to put lots of energy into constantly analyzing and second-guessing the thoughts of those around him/her. It might work in a small closed community, but it seems a tad unworkable for a school or office environment. 'Tis a nice sentiment, however.

i have friends from just about every basic Christian denomination, Jews, Wiccans and yes atheists so I guess I'm not sure and I'm glad for that. there are time when people ask specific questions -- will i go to h#ll if i do this or do that - yes then i will tell them what I was taught as a Catholic -- IE that is YOUR choice. if you know it's wrong and still do it AND when you are standing in judgment if you still don't repent well then.... you might if that is your choice. being a Catholic people are always picking on how we do things (for the last umpteen generations) I will quote scripture but.... (thanks for the reminder about my one atheist friend.... she was SOOOO funny, she went one christmas and had me come out and bought this huge blow up grinch thing.... said if she had to look at my lighted nativity for a month i got to see the grinch LOL it was all done with love and humor. once she was frustrated about something and we were talking and she was all heated and started to say I swear to [dramatic pause, head shake] "your God" and we just started laughing.... her frustrations were gone and i told her see God even helps an atheist through their frustrations.... she laughed even harder.)

The Bible says (Matthew 7:12) So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
So what about the 'in everything' ?
The word 'attempt' in the question recognises the fact that you can't - not without God's help.
