I've coughed up a small lump of stuff that smells really bad, it's soft and about a quarter the size of my little finger nail, greyish in colour.
It also happened about a month ago. Any idea what this is?

They're called tonsilloliths. They are hidden in the crevices of your tonsils, and they're made from mostly dead tissue, and possibly other particulate matter. A normal tonsil can clear them out naturally before they get too big, but people like you and me have to hack them up or use some other method to clean our tonsils (I actually use a dental pick, or I spray salt water directly at my tonsil with a baby syringe).

Short of having your tonsils removed, there is no cure. Just clean your throat from time to time.

If it feels like snot, its called phlegm...If you're really worried about it you should see a doctor or respiratory therapist, they'll be able to help. Try mucinex or some sort of cold medicine to break up the congestion and help you cough up the rest of it. It sounds gross, but you should really try to get that stuff out of your lungs. If it is harder than snot, these other people could be right. Either way you might want to see your doctor.

If you smoke ,stop! If not go to your doctor right now. It sounds like you need antibiotics and do not put this off. I had this happen 2 years ago and I could not get out of bed. Go to the doctor now!

I call em **** balls.

I asked a doctor about it he said they are tonsiloliths. Basically junk that gets stuck in the crevices of your tonsils and gets all stinky, he said to gargle with salt water.
