Small car and "safe" are almost mutually exclusive. If you are worried that he is going to run it into a stationary object, then a small car with a bunch of airbags will do as well as a large one. If you are worried that he is going to get t-boned by a super-duty pickup truck whose bumper is even with your bro's head when he is sitting in his sweet little Civic Si, well no amount of side-curtain airbags are going to prevent that bumper from taking his whole roof off. Personally I would go to Carmax and get a 1-2 yo Crown Vic with leather. Crown Vics depreciate like a rock, so don't buy new, but they are great cars.

Safer???........ For a used car neither!! You have to understand -- If a dealer takes a car in on trade in he doesn't know how the car was treated now does he??...... For all you know little cousin timmy was doing donuts in the high school parking lot with the thing......... In many states dealer's do have to offer a warranty but that still doesn't mean its a good car..... Private party sale ???? They can lie there A#@es off and tell you it was a great car ---- Maybe they crashed it -- had seedy's garage fix it and carfax doesnt know --- Then where are you at????? I prefer to buy private party myself ----- Ask how many owners its had --- have a body shop look at it --- yes a mechanic would be great but a body man is better --- They can ALWAYS spot previous accident damage....... Carfax? -- Sure go ahead and carfax it -- But dont be a chump either -- I looked over a car that we found signs of 2 crashes (replaced radiator supports, outer / inner rear bumper changed and 1 door changed) ---- and guess what -- carfax had no record of it...... Dealers charge as much as 35% more -- I would rather pay a lower price and take my chances..... In buying driving and selling for 40 years I have a clue....... Stop trying to be so safe..... Most people spend more time planning a vacation that learning anything about cars.... Most folks will spend a couple of grand going to the bahama's ..... Then spend $20000 on a used car they know nothing about....... Take the time to learn about cars.... How to tell whats junk and what isnt.... In your life you will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on cars, maintanance, etc,etc...... So get a clue.... If you truly are car helpless than make friends with a local body shop FIRST -- Then go find a car for them to look at..... NOT the other way around....

Volvo is still the safest car, they crash test more than anybody in the world and study each accident a Volvo is involved in and make changes as appropriate, they have the best anti whiplash seats. Many of the current safety innovations were pioneered by them.

If you want to research car ratings on performance, safety, fuel economy, etc., subscribe to or buy monthly the Consumer Reports magazine, yearly buying guide, and yearly Autos issue. No car is recommended unless it is adequate in safety, performance, and reliability. Check it out; that way you won't have to waste 5 points asking a question in Yahoo! Answers. Also, Yahoo! has an autos section.
