As Ex bus driver---Heating is turned off, by stop taps in Engine compartment. Its a job for the grease monkeys --& they forget. and because we have such lousy summers(global warming?? Bolocks) its easier to leave it on---otherwise you d have freezing busses in the Winter.

Drivers don't always have to endure the same heat. They normally have a separate ventillation (and sometimes air-conditioning) system in their cab, which with all the security screens (these days) makes for quite a selcuded environment.
Passenger saloon heating on more modern/advanced buses can have solenoid valves as well as the original engine-bay gate valves, so the driver can turn the heating off.
Bus engines do not overheat if the saloon heating is not used - there is something else wrong with the vehicle!

I work for a bus company and one reason is that leaving the heating on in the summer helps cool the engine down. Buses overheat quite easily due to the engine being at the back and no air flow to cool the engine. The only thing that cools it is the engine fan which is not sufficient in very hot weather.

The majority of the heating on buses is attached to the engine cooling system. If the 'heating' is turned off then it is highly likely that the engine will explode when it gets too hot.

For all the old dears wrapped up like they're going to the Artic.
Depending on where you're sat you'll be on top of the engine too, which might warm things up a touch.

Next to a drug dealer, pimp, or traffic warden, being a bus driver must be the most empty sad existence on earth. So, they attempt to sweat the whole thing out somehow ?
