My mother-in-law, who is 87, lives with us. Sometimes our commitments force us to be away for hours at a time. I would like to know what's out there that she could use that would be an emergency life-line - something like "The Pendant." Is there anything better? Something could detect a problem - say, a fall, etc. - without her having to take any action?
She has 99% of her marbles ... but just in case!

There is no "motion detecter" for people when they fall. Call her and be there when you can.

My husband's grandfather has that pendant thing and it's a waste because he forgets to use it... He ends up calling family members instead of just pressing the button... I would say having a home health aid.. Try SeniorCare or something like that. Where a person is trained to aid the elderly...

the best system is the one where her home is made to be safe. get rid of items such as rugs or oddly placed furnishings she could trip on. she she avoid having cords stretched across walkways, or many items plugged into one outlet. having a shower without a raised threshold is handy too. make sure there is a phone in each room in her house, or as the other person said, a pouch or lanyard for keeping the phone on her person is a good idea. call her primary doctor and the physician can order an occupational therapist to walk through the house with her to make sure her surroundings are safe.
