God calls priests. Just as Samuel heard the small voice of God, every man and woman needs to listen for the calling of God for his or her life.

I'm not sure that you realize this, but in the United States, it is no longer the custom of families to decide what the children will do with their lives. Rather, those decisions are left up to the children themselves.
Some young men are going into the priesthood, but simply not in the numbers that they used to; many dioceses are not allowing gays, and that automatically diminishes the number of priests available. They have this sick idiotic idea that gay men are responsible for child abuse in the church, being unable to distinguish between homosexuality and pedophilia.
If you really think that families should choose vocations for their children, do you plan on doing this for your own? Will You decide whether your children will be priests, nuns, doctors, lawyers, plumbers, firemen or trash collectors? Should we all press our chldren into areas that are underserved?

Ummmm hello???? Are you talking about voluntarily giving your life to God? Or are you talking about signing up for the draft? The priesthood is not something a parent can force their child to do. That person must want to give his up his life and serve others. I have an uncle, and a brother who both chose the priesthood. Trust me - this is not something any parent can push their kid to go into.
The church got itself into this mess, and the general population helped by not making sure that their children went to mass. When I was growing up (1960's), if you were Catholic, you went to church and confession. Period. Not any more. Most parents today don't care if their kids get any religion or not. Very sad......

Now just how am I supposed to convince my son, who hates going to mass, to give up the idea of ever having a family and submit his life to a beaurocracy that controls his life?
Not that I'm opposed to it -- I would be proud of him if he became a priest -- but you talk as if it's a parent's choice.
The church has to address its bigger problems if it wants to renew vocations. And when I mean the church I mean all of us.

That's not really the point - parents don't send their sons off to be priests, it is up to each individual to decide whether or not to pursue the priesthood. It's a personal and private decision, not to be made by a man's parents.

You can't force a child to become a priest if he doesn't want to. Are you crazy? Is supposed to become from within the child. We like to call ourselves Catholics, not Romans. Besides, in my town there are enough priests so the church is fine.

It takes a special kind of person to become a member of the clergy and unfortunately the world we now live in doesn't promote spirituality but materialism.

Amen. I, too, pray and fast for an increase in vocations.
