My question here is..

COULD this be a possible, viable solution to the problems in Afghanistan - RADICAL though it sounds and appears AT THIS TIME...?

Really there's no comparison between Mexico and Afghanistan. The opium trade is one of Afghanistan's problems but not the most serious on. It's been in civil war for 30 years and is bitterly divided along tribal lines.. It has very little modern infrastructure and even if it didn't have all those and other problems isn't in a good location for tourism (not very near any large wealthy countries to provide tourists).

It's probably about the last place any sane person would want to go for a holiday right now.

Hmm I am sat there thinking of how much fun it would be in my rented bijou mud-brick Helmand compound. No Tequila no chirizo sausages and not a taco for kms. Mexico or Afghanistan - ease of developing a tourist industry you tell me, which is easiest? Seriously we would have real problems rapidly developing broad replacement economies for what are remarkably easy agricultural products namely Opium Poppy and Cannabis. Easier to buy the drugs at source from the farmers at a fair price and run our own NATO drug cartel and then destroy, refine or flood Iran with the product. Personally I like the concept of turning all the Persians in to 'smack-heads', easier than dealing with them politically.

The chance of tourists goint to Afganistan is zero. No reason to go there even without war. A radical solution for radical muslims...not likely.

Why not? Tourism could bring in a lot of new jobs. Problem is, would they come for the scenery, or would they come to smoke doobie? I think we know the answer to that one!
