I went to Florence Italy and it was very different from the US but it is the same as traveling to any new place. People are friendly. If you plan to travel by subway train, you can get a free map in the train station. During the day, it's fine to look at a map and people will actually offer to help. In the evening, it's best to know where you're going in advance. It's safe but you should look alert. Don't be afraid to speak in English. Times Square has a visitor's center at Broadway between 46th and 47th St where you might be able to find guides in Italian. Soho and the village has lots of store and small streets, closest thing to Italy. There are people from all over and different cultures, you'll have a blast. Look at the other questions I answered about NYC for things to do.

Put simply, know that you are standing in a city of great architectural and various other forms of history. Some of the world's tallest buildings in the early 20th century are still here. Just be careful. New York City, while it may look sparkling on the outside, can be dangerous if one is not wary. But don't get me wrong, New York City is a great place.

Be careful. A lot of people try to charge tourists more money than the usual rate. Shop only at reputable and big stores. Eat at well-known places. Try not to get ripped-off and stay in the safe neighborhoods. You'll have lots of fun!
