I have seen loads of people doing this but unfortunately it`s not usually them that end up in a crash it`s the innocent ones, much stricter penaltys and controls over this i think....

Very simply, people will obey laws for two reasons. One is the fear of punishment, and the other is because they see the value in the law.
Many people do not think that driving and talking on a cell phone is dangerous. I drive about 1000 miles a week, and I have no problem using a non hands free phone. In area where the nanny state has decided to make it illegal for me to do so, I am just more careful to watch for law enforcement. The law causes me to have to divert my attention (looking for cops) more than the phone conversation.
Some people can use a phone and drive safely. Some can not even walk and chew gum without problems. Those who can use a phone safely should not be penalized for the lack of other's ability.

We live in Spain and drivers and riders here don't bother about the law, especially when in small towns and villages. Use mobile phones, no seat belts, kids climbing all over the inside of the car. Riders using mobiles, no helmets, young girls (including pillion rider) on scooters wearing only bikinis and flip flops. Nobody stops at red traffic lights unless they are forced to. The culture here is so much different, but its fun in a way.

I don't drive but as a pedestrian I see this all the time. You can see that they are not paying attention to the road. Either ignore the call and pick up your voice-mail later or pull over. Unfortunately, if there was an accident it would not be the person who used their mobile illegally who gets hurt but some poor sod in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I see it all the time. People 'always' talk on there phone. A few weeks ago, there was a bad accident, and now its out in the news that text messaging was going on with this persons phone at the time of the crash. All five in the vehicle died. Very sad. When are people going to learn?

You're right there doesn't seem to be any improvement since it became illegal. In fact people are getting more sneaky.Talking into a phone they are holding is bad enough but I saw someone with their hand resting on the steering wheel texting !Also I saw a cyclist talking on a mobile phone but a police car pulled alongside and confiscated it because apparently they had already warned him once.!

I agree, no one should talk on the phone while driving , unless you have a hans free devise, that it should be a blue tooth or similar so you can activate it on comand. I got in a fender bender reaching for my phone and I had an earpiece in just needed to hit one button on my phone, and hit the person in front of me. Also I have a problem with drivers who multi task such as reading the paper , texting, putting on make-up, the list goes on and on .

What I think is that people find it neccesary to talk. They can't talk comfortably in home nor office. Probably a car is the only place left.

Some people have an over-inflated opinion of their driving abilities, it's the same with those stupid s ods who claim they drive better when drunk. Or those who claim they have strong arms so they don't need to wear a seat-belt!
