I would like to know more about becoming a midwife. I don't want to get a nursing degree first however. Can anyone help me out with this. I really want to do this and I will go through the typical nursing program if I have to; I was just wondering if there was another way. Thank You!!!

A midwife is like the natural alternative to an obstetrician.

(I live in RI by the way)

There is a good article on midwivery on Wikipedia. Rather than reproduce it here, you can find it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwifery

Apparently you do not need ANY specific training to be a 'traditional midwive' but there is specific training to be a nurse/midwife, and there are several accreditation programs available. There is also certification, called the Certified Midwife, is currently recognized in only three states (New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island).
