How does a person or a party pay for the law suit when they are found guilty of a crime if the amount of money is something they do not have? For example, the Roman Catholic Church of Los Angeles may be paying over $600 million dollars to people who are effected by the sexual abuse scandel. How would the church pay that much money??? Or anyone???

Lawyers, who are businessmen, generally only take on lawsuits they know they can win against parties they know can pay. They rarely argue lawsuits against those who can't pay .Because they make no money in such cases.

Probably the "negotiated settlement" with the church requires that the lawyers get 1/3 +- or $200+ million.

Destitute complainants have little success against destitute defendants.

First off $600 million is pocket change to the Catholic Church.

Some times they have insurance. Sometime there is a party that is vicariously liable. A good example of this would be a UPS delivery person driving drunk on the job kills some one. Estate get a $2 million dollar judgement primarily against the drunk driver but becuase the driver was operating within the scope of his employment the family can collect from UPS. So UPS would pay the $2 million and then go after the driver for it. If the driver only has $20,000, UPS is out the $1,980,000.

And sometime the plaintiff wins big but collects only a little because the defendant doesn't have the money.

Do not be fooled. The Catholic Church isn't hurting for money. They have it and more. It is one of the world's wealthiest businesses. As for the every day person there are different ways. Selling off all real property to pay some of the settlement and go bankrupt. Liens levied on salaries or any other income or property. If you're real lucky your insurance company may pay it but good luck getting insurance after that.

The catholic church is one of the richest faith based organizations in the world. The Vatican alone is richer than most countries on the planet.
Sometimes when individuals are sued they have liability insurance to pay the settlement.
If someone does not have the money, they don't pay.

Some times their insurance will pay, but other times, they can't and end up going bankrupt.
