i have tried pressing the keys that have a pic of what looks like a speaker , the pg up and pg dn keys with holding shift but that wont do anything

Fn and page up/page down for volume up/down. Fn End is the mute key. Mute is a separate function and pressing Fn Page up won't disable it. You have to Fn End first to disable mute before you can hear anything. The shift key isn't required for any of the sound functions.

There should be a little speaker in the bottom right hand corner - click on that to open volume controls.

It might be hidden behind the < symbol. Click the < to see.

on your startbar there should be an icon that looks like a circle with another circle inside. Left click it and volume controls should be offered. If not, goto start, all programs, accessories, entertainment, vol control

Its the function (Fn) button you should press, not the shift.
