I dont think Lara's record of 400* will be broken too soon. These days teams are not batting for the length of time required to accumulate such a score. When looking at Haydos' 380 and Laras 400, you have to remember the circumstances. Haydos belted his runs on a Perth flyer, condusive to high scoring (people forget the 80 ball 113 Gilly got in the same innings), which is why he had 380 up by just after tea on Day 2. Laras 400 came on the flattest of pitches the world has ever seen, and came over 3 days as he batted to make sure his team did not lose.
As for Lara's record for most Test match runs, I think Ricky Ponting might be able to go on and break that record, given his current run scoring patterns. As we play more and more cricket over the years I think this is a record that will be broken a number of times.

Nothing is forever except GOD. If the great Brian Lara can do it ,others can do it as well. Remember Hayden's 380 & Mahela Jayawardne's 374. They were mighty close of surpassing the landmark of 400. Lara has even scored 501 in county cricket. So the record can be broken. I don't know about the future but at the moment people like Kevin Peterson,Mathew Haydon,Sangakara & Chris Gayle can beat this record. Dhoni can also do it but he comes at a very low position so it's very difficult to even get a 100 there

It would be hard to believe that no one would break Lara's records. The one day game is a lot more popular than test cricket. Therefore there are going to be more batsmen scoring runs faster, posting bigger totals in test cricket. I think an Austrailian or South African might beat his record, they have some pretty heavy hitters.

Sangakkara can break Lara’s highest test score (400). Because he can play long innings like Lara. Already six double hundreds have been scored in just 67 test matches. Ricky ponting would break other test records in near future.

While Sehwag cannot be compared with Don Bradman, Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar, he has a good potential and he is already a master blaster when he is in form.

my word, highest test score? Lara has only had it a few years, or does everyone forget Hayden's 380 ??
Yea, it can be broken, unlikely, but will probably happen one day, especially as new teams and more batter friendly wickets appear daily.
