Actually, You cannot estimate.. Various factors are there..
they are 1. message size, 2. actual physical distance and 3. network traffic of the sender and the receiver's client. the first two are understandable.. the third is because messages are not sent as a whole, they're sent as packets of equal size through different paths. this makes the whole estimation very difficult. But one thing is sure, usually it will not take even minutes if u use a decent server.

ok i'm just going to warn you about the food situation in the uk...the british only eat to avoid starving.
there is no liptons, sweet water, no free soda or coffee refills
no proper sausages, no fries or onion rings
their menus state just "cheese", no choices between swiss or jack or whatever"
they have simply "white" or "brown" bread, no choices between varieties
if you ask them for yellow mustard they will look blank
their idea of a sandwich is a thin piece of ham and cucumber
if you want to be safe you will have to stick to the italian restaurants, that do have italian chefs, tgi fridays outlets where you can find them, and mcdonalds & b king
oh and manchester, like the rest of the uk is full of drunken loiterers at night who like to take an interest in innocent passers by
