Hey there, I'm wondering what kind of external hard drive I should buy. I previously had a Calvary external hard drive till it just died 2 days ago for some reason unbeknown to me, and I'm looking for a new one, around 250 GB large, good price, that will last. The 2 brands that I seem interested in are Seagate and Western Digital, Seagate for the impressive looks, good reviews and a good warranty. But, I hear it has no on/off button which seems wierd to me. Western Digital because of the looks and the reviews as well. Can anyone give me some valuable advice as to which I should buy, and if not one of those brands, which else? Thanks a lot

I have a Seagate internal hard drive right now and I chose it over Western Digital because of the warranty. But for an external I'd probably go with either one since I wouldn't be having it turned on continuously. I'm thining about getting a Western Digital MyBook because they're not too expensive and look pretty compact, and I think they run solely on USB without the need for a separate AC cord. I can't say for sure about the lack of an on/off button, but I think it does have a Safe Shutdown function so you could probably just unplug it after performing the shutdown or stopping the device from the Windows system tray.

Why not buy an external hard drive enclosure with the features you want and, then, add the hard drive of your choice? It would probably be less expensive and Seagate (yes, I'm biased) has a 5 year warranty, which is better than most other brands.
