I'm buying a computer as a sophomore in high school. If I buy a laptop now, I'll be using it as a desktop for the next 2 years but I'll be able to take it with me to college. Couldn't I take a desktop or would I need something portable to take into my classes or would I be getting a newer one by then?

YES! A laptop is the one of the many better investments for school. It's your job to keep up the laptop til college, but that wouldn't the problem. A laptop is even a good thing in high school. A desktop is a good tool to have but the feature of taking the laptop with you will come in handy. You don't need anything to big and fancy; durable is what you need, go for it!

It depends on what you want do after college. If you just need it for simple classwork for college and Internet then a laptop is the best way to go. You can get a laptop and get one with the memory that you need. Desktops are good only if you want to store lots of memory and run large programs.

If you can afford it, a laptop is definitely the way to go. You will be able to do all your work on it, as well as watch movies and listen to music.
If you get sick of working in a dorm, you can always take it down to the local coffee shop and write your paper there, making the portability factor seem like a necessity.

Yes, I think you should get a laptop when you are in high school. Laptop is more convenient for you and you can take along with it. Beside desktop is for home use mostly! I might be getting a new laptop soon and I will be take it along to use outside from my home!

Couldn't you take a desktop to class ? Is that what you asked in your message? Uhhh... I don't know how you are gonna do that.
I think laptop is the best for students to use it in classroom :) Portable, lighter to carry and will fit on your desk.
