The Kremlin announced Saturday that President Vladimir Putin had signed a decree suspending Russia's application of the 1990 Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) treaty.
The CFE treaty, which came into force in 1992, is one of the key post-Cold War security accords in Europe.
It limits deployments of tanks and troops in countries belonging to NATO and the former Warsaw Pact in eastern Europe and lays down measures aimed at confidence-building, transparency and cooperation between member states.
Russia had threatened several times to pull out of the treaty amid unease over US military encroachment into territory once part of the former Soviet Union.
Moscow particularly objected to US plans to place elements of a missile defence shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.
The US State Department said it was "disappointed" by Russia's announcement.
Washington "remains committed CFE's full implementation ... (and) look forward to continuing to engage with Russia

The Russian's put a radar and anti-missile system around Moscow back in the 90's in violation of the ABM Treaty. That was one of the reasons we pulled out of that bogus treaty. Putin's pulling out of the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty in response to the US plan to put 10 interceptor missiles in Europe to defend against a possible attack from a rogue nation such as Iran. Given the fact that Russia has 1000's of missiles, one would realize that Putin is full of crap. As for your emotional reaction, I'm just glad that you're not the President. What a wimp.
Just an aside. A friend of mine who moved to the US from Russia told me that a lot of Russian television stations showed little or no sympathy for the US immediately following 9/11. Russia has never been a friend of the US. It would serve Russian interest if a middle eastern nation hit Western Europe with a nuke.

Russia never was a real ally. They counter our efforts with any opportunity they get.
We are right on with the missile shield. Russia knows they can defeat or overwhelm any shield we put up, but a rogue nation that has a few missiles will be prevented from attacking Europe.
Putin just used this issue and Bush's current unpopularity as an excuse to break the agreement, even though Bush negotiated with him in good faith on the issue. Putin has dreams of the old Soviet Union.
If the Russians would not have sold the nuclear and missile technology to nations that threaten Europe, the shield would not be necessary. Hypocritical? I think so.
At least now we won't have to play nice with them anymore. Their mistake.

News Flash!
The cold war never ended!
Russia has been supplying China and Al Qaeda with technology and weapons to wage war on the United States.
I'm not a supporter of Bush but I would like to say that I don't think having problems with Russia can be avoided.
We are going to have problems with them no matter what we do to avoid it and I even suspect we might have to go to war against them in the future when China invades us with Nuclear attack.
I also believe that Asama Bin Laden is a hired mercenary for China to get us to go to war on terror in an attempt to deplete our resources and military strength so after years of being at war we will be vulnerable enough to attack by China.
I also believe the reason why we can't find Bin Laden is because he's laying low in China far away from any cave we might be searching for him in.
I wonder how many people are in our Government that want Communism governing the United States and are working night and day to aide our enemy's toward their goal.
I have a pretty good idea who some of them are.
But as the saying goes.........
It aint over till the last trumpet sounds.
So just let them try destroying America's Democracy and we'll see how far they get with it before we kick their a**.

Well, Bush has p*ssed off the Ukranians and the Georgians by antagonising Russia. Now they're going to have Russian armour on their frontiers that hasn't been there for years. And with the large pro-Russia minorities in each country complaining about being persecuted, it won't take much for a situation similar to the Sudeten German question of 1938 to arise again.... the Russian army going to the "aid" of ethnic Russians in border areas being used as an excuse to reoccupy old territories.
Just another example of unintended consequences - something the Bush regime has specialised in over the last 7 years.
Bet the Estonians and Latvians (both with pretty large Russian minorities too) aren't happy either.
Where this is going to bite the US most is in the goodwill lost among allies: Ukraine, Georgia, Estonia and Latvia were all small but loyal friends...it might not seem that important from 7000 miles away, but everything adds up over time.

It is nothing less than amazing how you have the situation completely backwards
The Russians have pissed US off by their opposition to the missile defense sheild. The Polish, Japanese, Indians, Czech Republic, South Koreans, etc...have all supported this common sense plan.
Putin is an ex-KGB czar who has assassinated media critics. And yet you fall on his side of the issue? LOL
BONUS: I bet you thought communism was "a good theory" but that "humans are too selfish to make it work"
Am I right???

Anyone who really thinks that the russians were ever or ever will be our friends is delusional...they were beaten economically, and they have been looking for our weakness ever since........now they are going to dictate where we put our missiles??....DEFENSE MISSILES??.....sorry, but you can NOT show weakness...we are doing nothing to show aggression towards them and if they don't like it....too bad!
