to restore a PC in windows xp
1. go to the start / run command and type msconfig press enter
2. from the window it opens, choose the button "launch system restore"
3. choose "restore my computer to an earlier time" and click next
4. this opens a calendar, choose a date to restore to [you can only choose bold numbers- these are the days a restore point was created]
5 follow on screen prompts - that's it, job done.

in terms of losing files, it depends where you store the files. if you have installed a new program or made changes to windows registry, you will most certainly lose these files
however, you will not lose files in the "my documents" folder
Changes to the desktop will also be lost.

To create a restore point is much the same as the instructions above except that in instruction 3, choose "create a restore point"

hope this helps

Try:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore to roll back your PC to the day before things went wonky.

NOTE: This doesn't always work as expected.

Press:

"Start"
"All Programs"
"PC Help and tools"
"System Restore"
"Create a Restore Point"
"Insert a date in, "Restore Point Description"
"Next"

Go back to a date before you had trouble.
You wont lose any files.
You can go backward, or forward.

"Create"
"Close"

Edit: Genoa is wrong. You won't lose any files in "System Restore". You can lose files in "System Recovery"
