Production Routing may be defined as the process stage or process operation sequence, usually on the factory floor. It describes the flow of work within an activity from one process to the next. Take a soft drink bottling plant, for e.g. The workcell process begins with empty containers which are broken apart and cleaned for future filling. Bottling machines place clean containers on a lift bowl to create a vacuum in the container. The empty containers are charged the container with carbonated water, filled with a soft drink blend, released the vacuum from the container, and moved down the assembly line. The filled container is capped, filtexed (assure container is full), and batch coded. Coded containers are warmed for condensation control, stamped with a contour packaging, packaged and palletized for warehouse storage. Each of these processes form part of the production route.
A work study person will observe the whole flow and see where he can shorten processing times or improve procedures to improve efficiency along the route.
