Because they're cheap to make and then make a good profit. And then come out on dvd and become number one for a week and earn more millions. If we would be more selective in what we watch, that would force the studios to be more selective in what they produce. As long as we fork over all these dollars based on a genre, then Mr. Hollywood will be there with his hand stretched out for his cut... :-) Remember a ticket for 'captivity' cost the same as a ticket to 'transformers'. It's up to you who you give your ticket money to.

Well this is just my opinion, but these kind of movies are NOT horror movies. It's just as you labeled them torture movies.I have been watching horror movies for a long time an not a squeamish type person. But I can't stand watching movies like this such as hostel 1 and 2.Maybe it's just people want to be shocked more in movies since real life has become what it is..

Don't get sucked in by the media about this whole torture-porn crap......check out the like of Cannibal Holocaust that was far more extreme than Capitivity.
Just the latest buzz-word to get more peope to watch their news and boost their ratings....

The War on Terrorism, as authored by President Bush.
Same reason nuclear war movies were popular under Kennedy, and political paranoia movies (Parrallex View, Winter Kills, etc.) were popular under Nixon.

I suppose they are not torture, they are mostly called horror. I don't know why anyone would pay six bucks plus six more for a popcorn and coke to be grossed out. I have no idea, and I usually have ideas about everything.

Because that's all you can watch now a days. Horror films with original ideas do not exist any longer. so therefore it is easier to make a torture film you don't have to have a plot.

I DON'T KNOW! Weirds me out... In Europe, directors have a much harder time getting violence in movies like this. It's not accepted - like it's pornography! I know Americans get all shocked seeing all the nudity in European films, but I don't know, kinda makes sense.... sex at least is something happy for the people involved. Violence, on the other hand - ugh!

Torture just seems to be the "in" thing for movies at the moment. People just seem to find it fascinating lately. No idea why though...
