I am African American. Although my skin is kinda tan, people think I am Latin American.?

Now, here is my question: A fellow in my class who is Latin hurt my feelings when he said that pure Africans (not mixed with White American or Native American blood) were primitive, unintelligent, and have never contibuted to society (he meant they never invented anything). He continued by saying that this is why they have been in terrible situations (like starving since the dawn of man) and they keep needing assistance from the West. I was shocked when I heard this and know this is untrue but had nothing to back this up. What can I say to this moron?? Please help

I can only comment on the Yoruba people of West Africa who had a proud civilisation thousands of years ago - a king, rules and laws etc. - in their own area of the great African continent. Then the white man came along, ignored the existence of African societies and proceeded to create borders suited to his purpose. This is why the Yoruba people, instead of occupying their own land, found themselves divided by a white man's border. Even worse is the fact that this interference placed opposing tribes in the same country (Nigeria). These two tribes hated each other but kept to their own areas. It was the white man's colonialism forced them together and caused the Nigerian civil war which created so much bloodshed and carnage. Therefore the white man not only kidnapped people from Africa to create slavery in America. He also interfered with Africa's national borders and proud cultural heritage. One must always remember that the continent of Africa contains many countries whereas the continent of North America contains just two.

Tell him that we, as humans, have all had our "primitive" era, and that if africans had been left alone, they, like any other races would have matured into an equal "community, society". It's the oppression of the west that makes people in other regions of the world starve, due to "globalization".
