I just need to clarify why file sharing was created. Was it to merely share non-copyrighted files such a music, videos, and manuscripts or was it so send copyrighted materials for free?

You're probably referring to "peer-to-peer" file sharing. If so, it's not really documented as to who started the whole mess. But any company you would have asked back in the day would have told you it was for sharing legal material, such as a music artist sharing free music to gain recognition.

I think it went something like this. You could always make a cassette tape of a vinyl album and give it to a friend. Along came Napster (a centralized, server based song trading site)and a lot of people suddenly had lots of friends. The record industry said you weren't allowed to have that many friends and this was somehow different from making a cassette copy because it could happen very fast and from a distance. The courts sided with them and Napster was sued and shut down. So this guy Gene Kahn developed Gnutella and kinda said "bite me." If there is no centralized server, you have no one to sue. That's when the recording industry had him killed. Oh wait, I forgot. It was actually that this brilliant young man who was on top of the world and enjoying notoriety and new found wealth decided to commit suicide. silly me. Anyway, the Genie was out of the bottle and P2P became commonplace and was found to be useful for more conservative business uses as well.

Originally, the internet was designed to SHARE personal, non-copyrighted, files with each other. Over time, it came to be used for pirating copyrighted materials.

Better email Shawn Fanning and find out.

When he first started Napster way back, it wasn't like it was today. It was mostly music and ebooks. You were lucky if you got one song to download at 5kbs/sec.

That was way back when you actually talked to people while you were downloading their music. Kind of reminds me of "talking" daily to a guy in Texas who had a bunch of Arabian music. He said he was taking a Pilot's course in Florida at the time. I even had his cell # which was out of Kentucky or Tennessee or something.

Lo and Behold, later........911.
