No, I feel about the same about the FSB as I do their forerunners the KGB, then the NKVD, and the Cheka. Russia's security was already threatened from inside and out in 1917, the year of the revolution. The United States did not feel the threat until the Second World War, and on the suggestion of the Canadian William Stephenson, Stephenson's friend William J. Donovan was directed by President Roosevelt to create the Office of Strategic Services in 1942. The CIA was established only after World War II, when the OSS was disbanded. Intelligence and Counter-Terrorist organizations get formed, change names/roles, and get disbanded regularly in the U.S. and Russia.

Nahhh - - - Homeland Security is yet another Bureaucratic Morass - - - a scam to skim Amerians for the salaries of thousands of employees under a man or woman who gets a fancu title. It is called 'Patronage,' a President gets to hand out jobs to friends & supporters, the more agencies that can be created the more jobs. Another 9/11 and trust me in addittion to Homeland Secuirty there will be a Department of Terrorism and after the next 9/11 a Department of Counter Terrorism and after the next 'incident' a Department of Counter Counter Terrorism.

In truth the FBI is the closest cousin to the KGB - - - an internal agency dealing with crimes against the Federal Nation. Ideally all Homeland Security would be well trained local police & sherriff departments sharing information and pooling resources in conjunction with the FBI which in turn works with the CIA the agency responsible for external security. Not layers & layers of bureaucrats making fat salaries but a streamlined security network. Unfortunately Americans are now addicted to big Government and while working minimum wage jobs, often two of them, eagerly agree that there needs to be a New Department of Counter Espionage & Terroristic Activities whenver a Geo W starts warning of :Liberal Terrorists lurking in the shadows threatening Democracy.

You're forgetting two important differences.

First the KGB was tasked with protecting the party from internal and external threats. Not the people, the party.

Secondly, the KGB would kill you or throw you in prison till you died if they felt you were a threat, or would someday become a threat, or might have children that would be a threat.
