Perhaps a little of both. In this day and age where it is common to be talking with someone from a country half way around the world via the internet, we tend to forget that the language we either grew up with, or are growing up with, may not be the same lanugage someone else speaks. In one of the forums I visit on a regular basis, I've held conversations with someone from Denmark.

But no matter where people are from, folks seem to often get annoyed when they can't understand what someone is trying to say. Or they get annoyed when someone resorts to using text and internet lingo to say something rather than taking the time to actually type things out in full. And they let folks know it.

I dont think that is the case at all. When someone comes here and says "I m a grete writter" - something is wrong. Communication skills are the backbone of being an author. And if a person cannot compose two or three coherent sentences here, then I often wonder if they are wasting their time in the writing game. I never make fun of such a mistake, however as someone who has taught Creative Writing for several years to kids from ages 6 - college, writes novels myself, and most recently ghostwrites very successful books - I do not hesitate to correct them. I would say it is related to having no manners. They do not care about the feelings of other people and are possibly trying to make themselves feel superior. They do not care that the person speaking may not be a native speaker of whatever language is being spoken or may have a speech impediment.

I have taught English to English people. I have also taught it to people whose mother language is not English. I have never made fun of anyone who makes linguistic mistakes, although sometimes we have been able to laugh about it if it concerns a double entendre etc. I always admire people who are trying to learn another language, and I would certainly never 'do them down'. I respect people. I think that anyone who has made fun of you over this issue is certainly ill-mannered, and that you should find someone else to help you.

If you make an honest mistake or are still learning English, then you should not be made fun of.

If you are too lazy to even attempt to avoid mistakes or get an education, then maybe making fun of you will motivate you to learn to use the language properly.

For me it's out of frustration. However, personally, I don't correct people's mistakes, I just get irritated when I read them because I cannot believe that the general standard of written English is so poor overall. Or perhaps, instead, people are just lazy and have no inclination to re-read what they've written (always saying that to kids!), not caring or having pride - just a case of "that'll do".

Because they have the misguided belief that education equates to intelligence, in my opinion education is more to do with opportunity and circumstance. Have you also noticed that the people who are most prepared to give someone a piece of their mind are the very ones who can least afford it?. I know people who are barely literate who have a wisdom that serves them far better than formal education. My partner works with people who have learning difficulties and sometimes they blow me away with things they say, so wise.

By "lingual" I hope you mean "linguistic."
Sorry, but I'm one of those mannerless malefactors who will always ridicule the semi-literate. The verbal nonsense pervading sites like YA sets a bad example for impressionable youth. Therefore it's inexcusable.

It's called pomposity and being full of smug self importance.

Obviously these small minded people never make mistakes - so they spend their lives looking out, and passing comment on, other people's mistakes.

They are to be pitied or, better still, ignored.

why do some people make fun of others who slurs, stutters, have accents or impetiments?
Because their brain isn't able to functionally pick up the words. Or they're insolent self righteous brats.
