There was a time in this country when we valued debate.
In fact that's what 'think tanks' were created for.
Educated Intelluctuals who brought many ideas to any given topic.

Sadly it seems now that if your opinion varies from the President's or the Republicans you are labeled "Unpatriotic" and "Anti-American.

Isn't challenging our leaders decisions when they conflict with the constitution and decency in fact extreme Patriotism?

How is any political discourse stateside affecting the daily operations in Iraq?
That's what Generals and military leaders are for!
Soldiers follow orders.

Maybe the problem is that Americans have been brainwashed into thinking we have a two party system. We don't. There's no two-party law anywhere. We have two parties that control 99% of everything, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for additional parties. Perhaps if we quit trying to force people into Republican or Democrat molds the country wouldn't be so divided on every single major issue. The problem with people picking one of only two parties is that it turns into an "us vs. them" and we stop listening to reason and start spending our time bashing the other side. It no longer matter which side has a valid point, all that matters is whether they're on our side or not.

If the country was even as supportive as they were when it started the enemy would have been discouraged and probably given up to fight another day. Iraq's new government would be up and running and our troops home.

But let's be real for a moment. You cannot have the constant drum beat in congress and in the press that we are losing and the people are sick of war and it is a quagmire and not expect those words to demoralize our troops and encourage the enemy. They listen to CNN, too, you know.

On the other hand, if all they heard was that America is determined, America is resolved, America supports etc. it would have to positively encourage our troops and demoralize the enemy. Don't you think?

In all of our History patriotism has meant support for and love of your government. Not subversion of or dissent from your government. You use terms like "conflict with the constitution and decency" . I have not seen this administration do anything that is legally unconstitutional. I am sure if it had there would have been an impeachment by now. If you are referring to any provisions of the Patriot Act, remember that was voted on and approved by Congress and extended by congress.

There is a big difference between what you like or don't like and what is constitutional and unconstitutional. I have no idea of what indecency you are talking about. If you are refering to prisoner abuse in Abu Grabe those individuals were court martialed and convicted. As they should have been.

I strongly disagree with you but that is America. If you wish to contact me to debate some more I would be delighted.

At present the terrorists know that all they have to do is play for time. Eventually the politicians will tire and bring the troops home. No need to talk peace, no need to compromise, just do the ropa-dope. That last war we "won" was World War II. The terms; unconditional surrender! If the terrorist knew that the whole country was behind the war, they would know they could never win. Then they might talk about coexistence with sincerity.

I was going to make a sarcastic remark about how this would result in an increase in enlistments, leading to more troops in Iraq. Then I realized that Bush and his cronies are "chickenhaws" and that would probably be true of Bush supporters--in short, there would be no increase in enlistments.

More seriously, iff all of America were behind Bush, it would make no difference to what's happening in Iraq. Reality is reality, regardless of your ideology, and the reality of Iraq is that it's a mess that the Americans created and have lost control of.

well people probably wouldnt have a problem being drafted, which is what we need to win the war in the first place. if you had people in for say 2 years at a time, we could win the war. Soldiers get paid to do their job regardless of what their country thinks of them. If you don't like the war oust your senator if he voted for it. it's simple.

dissent based on partisanship is the main reason Vietnam ended up to be a disaster.
Don't confuse that with having a different opinion. There is a big difference between having an opinion and building public dissension for our government.

Liberals need to learn from the past mistakes.
