lol...odd question...But actually I just watched a really good movie the other night called Freedom Writers. It's based on a true story, and actually it involves a lot of acceptance and racial issues along with the poverty and survival. I believe the lead was played by Hilary Swank...but im not totally sure.... Great movie though! You should definitely check it out!
Another good one is Breakfast Club! Definitley a classic! The kids aren't exactly poor, but its a very good movie!

Angela's Ashes based on the book by Frank McCourt is a very sad depiction of growing up poor in Ireland but also has a positive message of the resilience of the human spirit.

There are a few good ones, as far as being poor and life, some newer titles that you may like are "Freedom Writers", "Boys in the Hood", "The Pursuit of Happiness", "Alpha Dog", "Running Scared", "Short Bus", "Children of Men". If your looking for less Mainstream some of these may work.
"Prize winner of Defiance Ohio", "Captivity","Eye for an eye", and "Cast away".

Pixote is probably the best example, in that its star died in a knife fight five year after its release. Also the documentary with the poster that had its young female star dresses in a veil-- "Streetwise". Which also "boasts" two dead stars.
