You can but it depends on what you are actually drying. The dark items usually will transfer lint to the light items an visa versa. You should wash sheets and towels together. Clothes with other clothes.

Yes.
I know this isn't what you asked, but for the washer, I also recommend Shout's Color Catcher (or another color dye grabber, any brand) if you plan to mix lights and darks in the washer, that is.
But as to the dryer, I've done it countless times. It's fine. Unless you have the rare case of a completely brand new bright red shirt that leaks tons and is dripping wet, and you place it on top of pristine white shirts. Then maybe it'll bleed a little. But in most cases, no problem.

Its not such a good idea, not so much because of dye
transfer (usually the clothing isn't that wet if your washer
does a good job spinning dry) The biggest reason
not to mix light and darks is the lint ....white socks
will get dark pills of fabric lint on them and the dark things
will get light pills of white lint. On terry and t-shirt jersey
these can be a pain to get off, its almost like they meld
themselves into the fabric. So if you want your dark
T shirts not to have white specks all over and vice versa,
keep your darks and lights separated until they are
dried, folded and put away.

You can and people do, however, the best practice is to separate darks from lights and if you have enough laundry, separate by fabric weight also to eliminate the need for pressing. For instance, you can wash your sheets and permanent press items together. You can wash white towels with any other white or light colored items. Most items can be washed in warm wash and cold rinse. If you don't like using a fabric softener rinse, white vinegar does the same.
By mixing colors your clothes will loose their brightness and look old before their time.

I wash them in different loads, but mix them in the dryer. Depending on the darks, I'll put them with the lights in the wash, too. I'll never wash my jeans or anything that "bleeds" with the lights, though.

Yes, sometimes I mix the clothes for the dryer. Never ruin any of the clothes.

Not only can you, but I mix them in the washer too. It's the bachelor life. I've never once had a problem with colors bleeding. I'm starting to think it's a myth all around.

Yes. I thought only in the washer should you not mix lights and darks.
