It's very labor intensive and can take quite a while.

Dogs do have to be trained not to go in the house, but what you should have, is a nice sized run-around in your yard, with a shelter in it, then right when you wake up, all you have to do is take your dog to the pen for the day, put in food and water. Your dog will gradually get the fact that it needs to wait for you to take it outside before it goes to the bathroom, but makesure that you take them out right when you wake up, or ten minutes after. And bring the dog in at about 6:00pm, or whenever the sun goes down. Then the dog doesn't have to go to the bathroom at nigh. Good luck. It works for my dogs.

If it is a house dog then I would recommend that they are trained. You can teach them to go to the bathroom with a key word. I trained my dog to go to the bathroom when I say "Potty". Now I can tell when she needs to use the bathroom just by watching her expression when I say the word Potty. If she responds in an excited way then I take her out. If not then I know she does not have to go. Works great!

unless you want to have doggy poo and pee in the house, then i guess its fine.
and if you want to embarrass yourself in front of your friends, going to their houses w/ your dog.... then dont train your dog to go outside or the litter box. yep. its not that hard and takes about 2 weeks for dogs to learn to use the bathroom outside or the litter box.

If you take them out regularly enough they learn to wait until they are let out. If you sleep in or forget they need to go out with their bladder is full, it's our fault not theirs.
