I think that if the US and Russia always start arguing with one another over petty big things, it would be good, so that there is always balance of power.
And similar scenarios like Iraq and Soviet era Afghanistan won't be seen again.
Is the Cold War going to return?

Yak rider, I understand. Your answer is true. But that could change. Since Russia is now a market economy.

Some of you say "Russia has enough nukes that can wipe out the world."
So does the USA.

Putin and Bush planned it to help the elections in 2008, and keep defense contractors busy with business. Saber rattling to the nationalists is always good for the milltary industry, and paranoid nutcases in both countries they live and breathe conspiracy theores day and night. Cold war return its because Putin and Bush want to keep milliltary contractors busy is all.

I think it is good that Russia is standing up for what it believes in and not letting America have their way when they want it. Even though the US is still going to do what they want, it won't be without someone standing up and saying No. When Russia was talked to about it they we not against the idea, just the locations and they even went as far as suggest locations that they would agree with, why can't Washington ever try to listen to what other countries say. Just because they didn't think of those places shouldn't mean they are the wrong places. No we have to worry about another Cold War or worse because we can't compromise.

I am more worried about being struck by lightning then a war breaking out with Russia. I believe that Russia wants to stimulate their economy by pumping money into their defense. Maybe even get into a little tussle with a former soviet republic. As far as a massive invasion into Europe, no way. I think them breaking away from an arms pact is symbolic. Think about it, they have enough nukes to destroy the world many times over by themselves, with or without a treaty. Putin is doing a little sabre rattling, but I'm not worried about war with them.

It's absolutely meaningless. The Russian military is a total joke. If they didn't have nuclear weapons they would not even be a regional power.
1. They've got a conscript army with little or no training and massive draft evasion. They have nothing like a professional core of NCO's. They can't even get food to their soldiers.
2. Their navy has been tied up to the pier for over a decade. Even in its heyday the Russian navy was never able to sustain operations outside of home-waters.
3. Pilots in their air force get about 2 hours of flight time per month.
4. The middle east is littered with the remains of the finest Russian electronic equipment money could buy.

America's allies are shrinking away because of our president's action and words. The Russians should be concerned that the US tossed out the ABM treaty in 2002. The Russians aren't a giant world power, but their arsenal is big enough to destroy us...Are there just 2 marbles in GW's head...and do they ever make contact with one another?

Russia has problems with U.S. missile placement in Eastern Europe in case of attack from the Middle East or elsewhere... Which is interesting because if Russia has no bad intentions to the U.S. why would they have an issue with missle placement?

I don't see how russia stationing soldier's along the european border affects america in anyway.
Twice was enough, it's Time Europe started fighting it's own wars and protecting themselves.
We can just park a air craft carrier in the english channel and tell russia, have fun in europe, but leave britian alone.

I think it's odd. Russia is no longer the player on the world stage that it used to be. Russia's GDP is approximately 1/10th of the US's, yet its population is 1/2 of America's. Who, exactly, does Russia think it's competing against?
