No. I've bought two dozen telescopes from several local dealers, plus mail order, and online, and always found the salesmen to be honest and helpful.

If anything, these guys are too honest [and they probably don't sell as many scopes as they could]; they tell you exactly what you should expect to see depending upon what type of scope interests you. Most are pretty honest - it seems as if there is something of a code of honor between atronomers and telescopers.

By the way I have a reflector and a Maksutov-Cassegrain that are collecting dust in a spare room because I am too freaking busy. Interested parties can email me. Thanks.

No, but there are hundreds of junk scopes for sale. Don't ever buy from an ad in a comic book.
