Employee: While I finish raising kids, I can count on a paycheck.
Private Contractor: After they are all raised and out of the house I could decide when, how long, the amount and if I even want a paycheck.

I (of course) want it all. The plan is for another five years as an employee and then going out on my own as a private contractor (clinician). LOL... yes I do actually have some skills! There are drawn backs to both. Luckily I am employed in an area that has a fairly high level of autonomy as it is. But I know that as much as I love my job, I cannot confine myself to it's box forever.

Let's say you have a trade, even a simple one, like house painting.
You can choose to work for the contractor, and maybe make $10 an hour, more or less, or you can contract it yourself at around $30 an hour. For every employee on that job, you're grossing $20 an hour, plus the $30 an hour you're earning yourself.
I think contracting is the way to go.

If I was a licensed and legit private contractor yes. If I was unlicensed no I'd rather be an employee.

there's no way it's better to be employed than it is to work for one's self. i kinda of stumbled into the lawn care biz some 25 years ago while i was working temp jobs at various factories with the hope of being hired. 5 of the places i formerly worked have closed their doors, yet my biz grows annually. self determination prevails over the decisions of one's overseers.
